What is a Sirtfood Diet?
This is the latest diet developed by two nutritionists in the UK and has been discussed by many people. It is a revolutionary new way to lose weight quickly without a radical diet. According to researchers, this particular food works by activate “skinny genes” in the body through the protein called sirtuins. Sirtuin is usually activated when you are fasting and doing exercise(1).
Researchers also believe that Sirtuins can protect cells in the body when they are under stress and regulate many body’s functions, such as metabolism, inflammation and aging. Sirtuins also affect the body’s ability to burn fat and increase metabolism, so you can lose weight while maintaining muscle(2).
The key to this diet is to consume certain foods called sirtfoods, which can cause the body to produce more Sirtuin protein and limit calorie intake.
Here is a List of sirtuin rich foods: Kale, Red wine, Strawberries, Onions, Soy, Parsley, Extra virgin olive oil, Dark chocolate (85% cocoa), Matcha green tea, Buckwheat, Turmeric, Walnuts, Arugula (rocket), Bird’s eye chili, Lovage, Medjool dates, Red chicory, Blueberries, Capers, and Coffee(3).

There are two phases in the Sirtfood Diet that last for three weeks. After you complete the phases, you can include as much sirtfood as possible into your daily meal.
To follow this diet you should consume the food with the recipe contained in The Sirtfood Diet book, written by the creator of the diet and drink green juice.
Actually, the core of this diet is green juice, which you should consume 1-3 times daily. The recipe is below:
Sirtfood Green Juice
- 2 large handfuls (75g) kale
- 30 grams (1 oz) arugula (rocket)
- 5 grams parsley
- 2 celery sticks
- 1 cm (0.5 in) ginger
- ½ medium green apple
- juice of ½ lemon
- ½ level tsp matcha green tea
The first Phase lasts for seven days, during the first three days of the first phase you should consume:
- 1,000 calories perday
- Green Juice 3 times per day
- one full meal rich in sirtfood per day
On the 4th – 7th day of the first phase you consume:
- 1,500 calories perday
- 2 Green Juice perday
- 2 sirtfood rich foods
Phase two lasts for 14 days. Although not focusing on reducing calories, you will lose weight steadily.
- There is no calorie restriction
- three sirtfood meals daily
- 1 green juice per day.
You can repeat these two phases as often as you’d like to lose more weight. However, you do not have to constantly diet, you are encouraged to continue to integrate more sirtfood into your daily diet on a regular basis and reap the positive benefits of your lifetime.
The Sirtfood diet is full of healthy foods, but this diet is most definitely not for everyone. Based on the book written by the sirtfood creator, many of his ingredients are so unique that you find it hard to buy them in grocery stores. Not to mention, the theory and health claims were based solely on early scientific evidence.
While adding sirtfood-rich foods with a variety of healthy foods, including lean protein sources, different fruits and vegetables, and whole grains to your diet is not a bad idea and may even offer some health benefits. But the idea to see the success of this diet alone for the average person is inconclusive.
